Paedophile sexually abused young girl more than 400 times
A remorseless paedophile who sexually abused a young girl more than 400 times and assaulted another during a EuroDisney holiday trip has been jailed.
But shameless rapist Robert Newsham, 78, claimed that there was nothing wrong with having sex with children before being locked up for 25 years.
A court heard how the sex beast abused one young girl more than 400 times and sexually assaulted another when he was the driver on a coach trip to EuroDisney.
Sentencing him today, a judge was left disturbed by Newsham’s twisted attitude towards his abuse, adding that he would continue to pose a threat to young girls for the rest of his life.
During a trial last month Newsham told the jury he thought girls of 13 or 14 were entitled to have sex with adults if they wished and that he knew when a girl was ready for sex, regardless of their age.
When he was asked about grooming, he laughed and said it was ‘a corny phrase’.
The retired coach driver will not be eligible for release on licence until he is almost 91 after being jailed at Exeter Crown Court.
The sick rapist had previous convictions for sexual offences dating back to the 1950s and 1960s before he moved to Devon and started work as a coach driver.
His work included school bus trips and outings for children including one in 1997 in which he abused an 11-year-old girl.
The court heard how the abuse has had a profound effect on that victim, now repulsed by the idea of any sexual contact with men.
Newsham, of Attwill Almshouses, New North Road, Exeter, admitted four rapes and six sexual assaults on one victim and possessing indecent images of children.
He was found guilty of two indecent assaults on the second.
Judge Phillip Wassall told him: “Your attitude to sexual offending is completely remarkable.
“This type of abuse changes the lives of the children and the way they think and act when they become adults. It changes the way they interact with other people.
“You tried to portray your abuse of one of the girls as some sort of loving relationship and described it as a natural flow. It was a most remarkable piece of evidence and very disturbing.
“You could not see that it was sinister grooming of a vulnerable girl. You have no recognition that you are wrong. You are a dangerous offender who presents a serious risk to the public.
“You have no insight and are not capable of taking part in any intervention to challenging your attitudes and beliefs.”
He abused one girl after encouraging her to do handstands when she started visiting his former home in Exwick when she was just eight. He went on to rape her repeatedly on a weekly basis for four years between the ages of 12 to 16.
He abused the second girl after offering her a free trip to Disneyland Paris. She found out they had to share a bed and he also got into a shower with her.
Mr Sean Brunton, defending, said Newsham will be a very old man when he is released from jail and is unlikely to pose a further risk at that age.
He said: “One the one hand he is personable and polite and respectable but it is clear he has a very jaundiced view of this particular aspect of life.”
Exeter coach driver denies abusing girl on Eurodisney trip but admits to other sex offences
A coach driver has denied sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl on a trip to Eurodisney.
Robert Newsham, 78, allegedly had a fascination for young girls and has admitted offences against another 11-year-old dating from the same era 20 years ago, Exeter Crown Court was told.
Newsham, of Attwill Almshouses, Exeter, denied two counts of indecently assaulting the girl in the 1990s. He says the incidents never happened.
Mr Richard Crabb, prosecuting, said Newsham was working as a long distance coach driver in 1998 and assaulted the 11-year-old at a hotel in France.
He said there was another aspect to the case and told the jury he has already admitted sexual assaults on another girl at around the same time.
He said: “He has admitted indencently assaulting the other girl and raping her when she was aged between 12 and 15. We say he has a sexual interest in young girls.
“He also pleaded guilty to other offences a long time ago in 1964 when he would have been 28. He admitted four offences of having intercourse with a girl under 16.
“Also, when he was arrested, his laptop was examined by the police and 256 indecent images of female children were found. He has admitted those other matters but we say he is denial about these allegations.”
Newsham told police the event did not happen and he had little memory of the circumstances surrounding the allegations.
