Exmouth paedophile jailed for abusing girl of nine
A pervert who abused a nine-year-old girl during tickling games has been jailed for four years.
Jamie Coombs put his hand down the girl’s trousers and made her touch him during the games which happened when she went to a house he was also visiting.
She endured the abuse for months before telling her family and although Coombs tried to deny it at first, he made a full admission after the police were called in.
Coombs, aged 24, of New North Road, Exmouth, admitted sexual assault and four offences of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity. He was jailed for four years by Judge Simon Carr at Exeter Crown Court.
He told him:”This was a series of serious sexual offences against a nine-year-old girl. It is perfectly clears that after a short period of time you targeted her for your own sexual gratification.
“There were elements of grooming and you are still trying to minimise your actions by describing them as nothing more than play fighting.
“It happened over a protracted period of time until she eventually had the courage to tell what you were doing. No doubt but for her courage this abuse would be continuing.”
Mr Lee Bremridge, prosecuting, said the abuse happened when the girl and Coombs both visited the same house, him after finishing work and her after school.
She complained to her family and Coombs initially denied what he had been doing and said it was nothing more than play fighting and tickling.
The girl’s mother made a victim impact statement explaining how her daughter had been affected by the abuse and saying it had a severe negative impact.
Mr Barry White, defending, said Coombs had been honest and open to the police as soon as he was interviewed and had pleaded guilty at an early stage avoiding the girl the worry of a contested case
