Wirral man, 74, given 15-year sentence for raping young girl

Peter Watson

This is the police mugshot of predatory paedophile Peter Watson, the 74-year-old pensioner who repeatedly raped a young girl.

“Dangerous” Peter Watson was locked up for 11 years, and handed an extended licence of four years, on Friday.

Liverpool Crown Court heard that his victim had been left severely psychologically damaged by the sexual assaults, which spanned a one year period when she was 11.

Judge Denis Watson, QC, told the defendant, a former RAF police dog handler: “You believed you were in a girlfriend-boyfriend relationship which gives me great concern.”

The girl read her own moving victim personal statement to the court and the judge said that for her the consequences of his crimes were “truly life changing.”

He said that the case involved “repeated and relentless sex abuse” with Watson even giving the little girl cigarettes to make her feel more grown up.

The judge said: “You corrupted her, there were elements of grooming and planning.”

Watson, of Upland Road, Upton, pleaded guilty to ten offences involving rape, attempted rape and sexual assaults.

He also incited her to engage in sexual activity and watch a sexual act.

He will have to serve two thirds of the custodial term before he can apply for parole.

The judge ordered him to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life and he also imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

The offences, which happened when Watson was in his 60s, came to light in February this year after the victim told her mum that had happened and the police were called.

As well as raping and sexually abusing her Watson made her watch sex films while they were both naked.

He also had a large make up box and got her to wear a dress and put make up on, said Paul Becker, prosecuting.

John Ballam, defending, said that Watson wanted his victim “to know he sincerely apologises for his disgraceful behaviour”.
