Man found guilty of rape, indecent assault and gross indecency offences against child is jailed

A 34-year-old Lowestoft man has been jailed for nine years after being found guilty of rape, indecent assault and gross indecency offences.

Johnathan Moore, of Lyngate Avenue in the town, was arrested in February 2014 after police were contacted by a young woman who reported that she had been sexually abused as a child.

She told officers that, from the mid 1990s until the early 2000s, she had been subjected to rape and sexual assaults on a number of occasions and had been threatened.

Police began a full investigation into what had happened.

Following his arrest Moore denied the allegations but did admit visiting the victim when she was a child.

Further inquiries were completed and sufficient evidence was gathered to pass a file to the Crown Prosecution Service who authorised a number of charges.

Moore was charged in October 2014 and was found guilty of offences – including three counts of rape, four counts of indecent assault and two counts of gross indecency with a child – at the end of August 2015.

He was then jailed for nine years.

The officer in the case, PC Lee Cudmore, praised the victim’s courage in coming forward.

“Moore committed a number of sexual assaults on the young victim who was under the age of 10 at the time the attacks happened.

“He also subjected her to threats and intimidation that put her in considerable fear of reporting his behaviour.

“Years later she found the bravery to contact police and our investigation confirmed the extent of the abuse.

“We are aware that it has taken some time to get this result but she has shown remarkable courage to see it through and we are pleased that we now have some justice for her.”
