Grandad who filmed up the skirts of young girls as they shopped escapes jail
A perverted grandfather who filmed up the skirts of young girls as they shopped and videoed children playing on a trampoline for his own sexual gratification has escaped jail.
Police found more than 3,000 indecent images of children on Clive Hugh Barlow’s home computers – dozens of which were in the most serious category.
His crimes were described as ‘sinister and calculated’ by a judge who spared him jail only because a custodial sentence would not address his behaviour.
Manchester Crown Court heard how Barlow, 69, had raced upstairs to unplug a laptop when police raided his Heywood home.
Judge Angela Nield said the images found on his computers were ‘frankly deplorable’ and said he had made ‘active efforts’ to film young girls by secreting a camera in a bag.
She said: “These victims did not even know they were victims and that in itself makes the offence both sinister and calculated.”
Judge Nield handed Barlow a three-year community order with supervision and an indefinite sexual offences prevention. He must also attend a sexual offenders’ treatment programme.
