Student optician struck off for indecent child sexual images
A student dispensing optician has been erased from the General Optical Council’s (GOC) registers for possessing child pornography.
Thomas Evans, from Milton Keynes, was struck off by the regulator following criminal convictions for making and distributing indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children.
In May this year, Mr Evans pleaded guilty to multiple counts of making and distributing indecent images after a number of child pornographic videos were found on a seized laptop. He was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment at Aylesbury Crown Court in June and will be placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.
At a fitness to practise hearing earlier this week, chair of the committee, Ian Crookall, said: “The child pornographic material involved the serious sexual abuse of very young children and the distribution of multiple images and videos.”
Mr Crookall added: “Given the serious nature and extent of these offences, the committee was of the view that it is manifestly apparent that the public and children, in particular, require protection from the registrant now and in the future. The committee concluded that erasure is the only sanction which would be sufficient to protect the public, including children.”
Mr Evans is now unable to undertake training to qualify as a dispensing optician in the UK.
