He began assaulting the child when she was eight years old, with the abuse being repeated over a number of years.
Temporary Detective Sergeant Laura Jones, who led the police investigation into the abuse, said: “I hope the proceedings enable the victim and her family to begin to move forward from the most traumatic time in her young life.
“Her bravery in coming forward to report this awful crime is commendable and I hope she is reassured knowing her abuser is behind bars.
“Any form of child abuse is truly despicable and we remain dedicated to identifying those responsible for these horrific acts and bringing them before the courts.”
Coates was also jailed for four months for a domestic assault, with the sentence added on to the sex abuse jail term.
Doncaster man found guilty of child sex offences
A Doncaster man is behind bars for sexually abusing a young girl over a number of years.
David Joseph Coates, aged 43, of Cherry Tree Drive, Thorne, was found guilty of eight counts of sexual assault following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court.
Jurors heard how his victim came forward in August 2014 to report the abuse.
Temporary Detective Sergeant Laura Jones, from Doncaster’s Public Protection Unit, said: “Coates continued to deny his offending, which meant the victim was subjected to the additional distress of a public trial.
“She has been incredibly brave throughout our investigation and during legal proceedings.
“I hope that the guilty conviction from the jury last week offers some comfort to the victim and her family after what has been the most traumatic time in their lives.”
Coates has been remanded in custody and is to be sentenced on Friday, October 30.
