A TEENAGER convicted of a serious sex offence was given a suspended custodial sentence at Carlisle Crown Court.

Jose Ferreira, 19, had denied an allegation of engaging in sexual activity with a child aged under 13 in north west Cumbria over a two-year priod.

However, earlier this year he was convicted of the offence by a jury.

Ferreira was sentenced today at the crown court by Judge Paul Batty QC.

After hearing background information about Ferreira, Judge Batty said he would suspend a two-year custodial sentence for 24 months.

Evidence was produced about excellent progress made in recent months by the teenager, who was also made subject to a two-year supervision requirement.

Ferreira, previously of Marks Avenue, Raffles in Carlisle but now lives at Hilda Close in Durham, must sign the sex offenders’ register for the next 10 years.
