Paedophile caught after asking a taxi driver to drive past a school
A man who posed as a woman on social media to befriend children was caught after he asked a taxi driver to take him past a school so he could watch pupils.
David Groom then showed the cab driver a photograph of what he said was a 12-year-old girl on his mobile phone – and when the driver alerted police they found disturbing indecent images of children on his computer.
Officers discovered the 28-year-old had been using a female’s name (Rosie Smith) on Facebook, Hotmail and WhatsApp to communicate with youngsters after searching his then home in Richmond, North Yorkshire.
David Groom of Corporation Road, who later admitted to a probation official that he had hoped to meet a child for sex, was jailed for five years and four months.
He pleaded guilty to two charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and ten of making indecent images of children.
Groom, who had got one of his victims to perform a sex act and send him pictures, will also be on the sex offenders’ register for life, and is banned from having unsupervised contact with under-16s.
