Ex-nurse who committed sex crimes against child has jail term slashed

A ‘well-regarded’ former nurse who committed sex crimes against a child in the 1980s has had her jail term slashed by top judges on appeal.

Judith Reid, 61, of Grocot Road, Leicester, was jailed for four years at the city’s Crown Court on January 13.

She was convicted of three counts of indecency with a child and one of attempted indecency with a child.

Her crimes took place in the 1980s when she was married to Robert Reid – they are now separated.

The victim, who was aged under 13, was made to sit on a bed and watch the couple engage in ‘foreplay and intercourse’, Judge Juliet May QC told London’s Appeal Court.

The girl was told by Reid to touch her husband’s genitals and offered gifts if she would get into bed naked with him, but she refused.

Grant Vanstone, for Reid, argued she should have got a softer punishment than her former husband.

He was also jailed for four years for four counts of indecency with a child, but had a 2010 conviction for taking indecent images of a child.

Reid was of previous good character, had worked as a nurse in the years since her crimes and had been ‘well-regarded’, the court heard.

Judge May, who was sitting with Lord Justice Elias and Mr Justice Edis agreed four years was too long and reduced Reid’s jail term to three years.
