Jail for sexually abusing girl

A pensioner convicted of sexually abusing a eight year old girl had been active the church, a court heard as he was jailed for four years.

Caernarfon Crown Court was told Michael Cresswell, 72, was involved with the Knights of St Columba religious organisation and a local cricket team. He also had a commendation for running the logistics operation at RAF Sealand.

Cresswell was found guilty at Mold Crown court of 11 charges of sexual assault on a child and causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

Sentencing Cresswell, of Woodlands Close, Mold, Recorder Wyn Lloyd Jones told him he had abused the girl, “for your own sexual gratification”

The judge remarked: “You Haven’t show any remorse for what you did. You ran the trial to the bitter end and were convicted by the jury”

“This was repeated offending and that must be reflected in the sentence”

Recorder Lloyd Jones added: “This is appalling behaviour towards a child”

During the trial, the young victim had to undergo a 54 minute cross examination by the Defence via a video link.

The defendant must register as a sex offender for life. A sexual prevention order was also made, to last indefinitely, which limits his contact with anyone aged under 16-years-old.
