A TEACHER who raped and sexually abused a young girl in Wigan was today starting a 12 year jail sentence.
A judge told John Grundy, who at one time was a deputy headmaster, that he was “a predatory paedophile” who had taken away his victim’s innocence.
The 64-year-old pervert had pleaded guilty to 15 offences, involving rape, sexual assault, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and attempted rape.
The offences spanned a five year period beginning when the girl was six or seven.
She was interviewed and gave details of her ordeal.
She said she had not understood what had been happening but it led to her self-harming, said Sarah Holt, prosecuting.
When arrested and interviewed Grundy, whose address was given in Machon Bank, Nether Edge, Sheffield, denied raping her but admitted “he had done stuff he shouldn’t have done.”
Paul Becker, defending told Liverpool Crown Court that Grundy, who has no previous convictions, is “totally ashamed of himself.” He is remorseful and “disgusted” about this behaviour and wished to apologise to his victim.
He has worked all his life as a primary school teacher and was once a deputy headmaster, said Mr Becker.
Jailing Grundy and ordering him to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life Judge David Aubrey, QC, said that he had committed the offences “for your own sexual gratification.”
He said that he had taken away the victim’s innocence “and you have passed a life sentence for her.”
The judge imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
