A former Bristol teacher has been jailed for more than four years for sexual offences against a child, having been convicted of similar crimes eight years ago.

Before Flavin, who was an art teacher at the school for 23 years until 2003, was charged with the offences he fled to Spain and police had to obtain a European Arrest Warrant to extradite him.

He was located and arrested in Spain in May this year.

The former football coach had volunteered to speak with police in August 2012 after allegations were made two months earlier.

The 63-year-old then received a request through the post last year, which he did not answer as he was living in Spain.

Monks Park School closed in 2009, six years after Flavin left, and reopened as Orchard School Bristol.

Detective Stephen Shallcross said: “Not only has Flavin committed these horrific crimes against a child, he then failed to return to the Uk in order to evade punishment for them.

“Flavin abused his position of trust as a teacher for his own sexual gratification. The victim suffered greatly at the time and has since continued to suffer the after effects of such crimes.

“This case highlights our resolve in locating these types of offenders and bringing them to justice.”

Flavin was jailed for six years and nine months for similar crimes in 2007, also at Bristol Crown Court.

The father and grandfather pleaded guilty to nine charges of indecent assault and four serious sexual assaults on one child, and six counts of indecent assault on another.

The former coach and chairman at Gordano Valley Giants Football Club in Portishead and became a mentor to one of his victims.

The victim said from the time he was 10 until he was 13, there had been repeated sexual contact between them, sometimes as often as four times a week.

Flavin had also bought him pornographic magazines and given him alcohol.

Flavin told the victim that if he told anyone what had happened, he would lose his job and his wife and could end up in trouble with the police.

Duting the 2007 court case the prosecution revealed the victim had suffered guilt over allowing himself to be abused.

He then had a chance meeting in a nightclub with another of Flavin’s victims, some years after the assaults.

They both discussed the fact they had been abused by Flavin and went to the police.

During the police inquiry, another player with the Gordano Valley Giants, who had not been abused, told officers that Flavin would often shower with the boys.

Flavin was arrested for these crimes in October 2005.
