Vile child rapist jailed for 12 years for abusing 12-year-old girl
A MAN has been jailed for more than 12 years for raping a 12-year-old girl.
Darren Daykin, 46, from Southend, was sentenced to 12 years and nine months in prison for raping the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, last year.
After initially pleading not guilty to seven sexual offence charges in June, Daykin changed his plea when appearing at Basildon Crown Court.
The girl’s mum, who also cannot be named, said her daughter’s life had been changed forever.
Daykin was set to face a trial next week, which would have involved both the mother and victim going to court, but he changed his plea.
The girl’s mother was first alerted to something being wrong after her daughter’s school called her in to talk with a police officer last September.
It took until May this year for the girl to reveal everything, during which time she had taken to self-harming.
Daykin was convicted of:
Two counts of child rape
One of sexual assault
Two of indecent touching, which took place between the beginning of July and end of September, 2014
two other offences were ordered to lie on file.
