Former police officer sent back to jail for dog, horse and pig sex images
A former police officer who worked as part of a child protection team is back behind bars for a second time after being caught with pictures showing people having sex with dogs, horses and pigs.
Paedophile Robert Branney, now 73, was jailed in 2017 after previously pleading guilty to one charge of making indecent photographs of a child.
The crime, which occurred between March 30 and June 21 2016, placed Branney in breach of a suspended sentence handed to him in May 2016 after he admitted possessing indecent images of children, making an indecent image and possessing an extreme image portraying a sexual act with an animal.
Branney had been a police officer for 28 years before retiring in 2001 and spent four years working in child protection, helping to protect children from sexual abuse from adults
On August 31, 2017, he was jailed for 14 months.
Branney, of Littler Trelower Park in St Austell, was released the following March and on Friday (January 3) was back in the dock at Truro Crown Court for admitting possessing five extreme pornographic images.
Prosecuting the case, Lee Bremridge described how on November 19, 2018, police went to his address to check Branney’s mobile phone, the officer noting how his phone history showed he’d been accessing websites showing people having sex with animals.
Former child protection police officer jailed for second child abuse images offence within a year
A former police officer who worked as part of a child protection team has been jailed after being caught with sickening child abuse images for the second time in a year.
Robert Branney, 71, of Treverbyn Gardens in St Austell, appeared at Truro Crown Court today (August 31) to be sentenced after previously pleading guilty at magistrates’ court to one charge of making indecent photographs of a child.
The crime, which occurred between March 30 and June 21 last year, placed Branney in breach of a suspended sentence handed to him in May last year after he admitted possessing indecent images of children, making an indecent image and possessing an extreme image portraying a sexual act with an animal.
Branney had been a police officer for 28 years before retiring in 2001 and spent four years working in child protection, helping to protect children from sexual abuse from adults.
Prosecuting barrister Ramsay Quaife told the court that the present offences took place after Branney was arrested for last year’s charges.
Mr Quaife said: “The offence came to light when police noticed a Category C image was uploaded to a website in July last year. Officers investigated the username which identified the home address.
“The paedophile online investigation then launched a search of the address on December 9 last year.”
Two devices were then seized which were found to contain 25 still Category A (the worst) images and one movie, 36 Category B stills and 197 Category C stills. Some of the children pictured were as young as five.
Officers also discovered file-sharing software and specific child sexual abuse images internet searches.
Sentencing Branney, Judge Simon Carr said the circumstances were worrying.
“On May 12 of last year this court passed a suspended sentence for almost identical offences but you clearly manipulated and misled all those trying to help you,” Judge Carr told him. “Throughout the whole court process you were committing more offences and continued to do so after the sentence was imposed.
“You were turning up to various events designed to address your problems convincing those there that you were engaging. The images seized included images of the highest category showing the forced rape of children.”
Branney was handed a 14-month prison sentence.
Ex-police child protection officer caught with sex abuse images just a year after being spared jail
An ex-police child protection officer faces prison for possessing paedophile material – just a year after being spared jail for the same sick offence.
Depraved Robert Branney, 70, was exposed when he was given a suspended sentence last year for looking at images of child abuse.
A court heard he lived an online fantasy life in chat rooms and webcams, inventing a daughter and granddaughter to fuel his discussions with “like-minded” men.
Just 14 months later the former Devon and Cornwall cop was back in court this week where he pleaded guilty to new offences, some in the most severe category.
Branney, who retired 15 years ago after 28 years service, admitted committing the vile crimes at the time of his previous court appearance in May 2016.
He pleaded guilty to making 25 images and one video rated Category A – the worst ranking.
He also admitted making 36 Category B images and 197 in Category C.
Plymouth magistrates court heard that the offences took place between March 30 and June 21 last year.
In May last year Branney was given a suspended jail sentence after he admitted possessing and making indecent images of children and possessing extreme animal porn.
The girls featured in the images found on his laptop appeared between six and eight years old. Two of the images involved penetrative sexual activity.
During sentencing at the time, Judge Christopher Harvey Clark said Branney “obtained excitement by indulging in sexual fantasies online” and through chat rooms.
He told Branney: “I have asked myself how you could sink so low; you who were a child protection police officer.
“No greater punishment can be passed by me than for you to see a mug shot of yourself on the front page of the local paper – with ‘child porn’ and ‘ex-child protection police officer’ linked together.”
Branney, of St. Austell, Cornwall, was sentenced to eight months’ in prison, suspended for a year.
He will be sentenced for his latest offences at Truro Crown Court on August 25.
He was released on conditional bail and ordered to sign the Sex Offender Register by District Judge Diana Baker at Plymouth Magistrates’ Court.
