Man who groomed a 13-year-old girl through social media is warned he faces a jail sentence
A Kilmarnock man who groomed a 13-year-old girl through Facebook has been warned he faces a jail sentence.
Twenty one-year-old Liam Rae, already a convicted sex offender, pleaded guilty at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court to sending the youngster sexual messages and exchanging explicit images and videos with her.
The offence was committed between September 2014 and March last year.
The court was told that, when the girl began talking to the accused on Facebook, she made him aware that she was only 13.
But “the conversation soon became sexual and he began asking for sexual images to be sent to him”.
Said the prosecutor: “The accused told her that he loved her and that, if she loved him she would send these pictures.”
Rae was persistent and the teenager did send him pictures of herself.
She also sent him an explicit video.
Rae sent the girl obscene pictures and a video of himself.
The two later met up at a concert in Glasgow, “where they cuddled”.
Rae “repeatedly asked her to come back to his house and to stay the night with him”.
The offence came to light when the girl’s mother, who was concerned about her daughter, came across a private message from Rae.
She opened it and found an explicit video. The woman immediately went to her local police office. After that the girl had no further contact with Rae.
The judge remanded Rae further in custody until July 15 and called for a criminal justice social work report, telling him: “You will have to be realistic. You are in a very difficult position.”
Rae has previous convictions for having sex with a 13-year-old girl and for breaching the notification requirements of the sex offenders register.
