Man from Shotton was addicted to images of children being abused

A man who started looking at spanking websites on the internet developed an interest in child abuse images, a court heard.

Police visited the Shotton home of Jordan Roberts, 21, after an email address linked to him had been used to upload a pornographic image. They found images and movies of child sex abuse.

Roberts was described as an isolated young man who was shy and who communicated with “virtual” people through his computer screen.

Viewing the images had become an addiction and although he had tried to stop on a number of occasions he could not do so and needed help.

Roberts, a student at Coleg Cambria at Northop on a two-year course on the care of animals, was also found to have an extreme movie on a laptop depicting sex acts between people and animals.

Roberts, now of Top Llan Road at Glan Conwy, admitted four charges of making indecent images by downloading them from the internet, two of possessing such material and one of possessing an extreme movie.

Roberts received a six month prison sentence, suspended for two years.

District judge Gwyn Jones placed him on rehabilitation which will involve one-to-one sessions with the probation service.

He was ordered to register with the police as a sex offender for 10 years and a 10-year sexual harm prevention order was also made.

The district judge said they were serious offences which troubled the courts. Custody would be more than justified.

Roberts, said the judge, had obtained the images and movies for his own sexual gratification over a period of time.

But he was a young man of no previous convictions and it was clear he had had a difficult time over the last few years, some of it as a result of the break-up of his parents’ marriage.

Roberts had led a nomadic, virtual life away from other people but he was now living with his father and was starting to express himself in a way which meant he communicated with real people rather than with virtual people on a computer screen.

Justin Espie, prosecuting, told Flintshire Magistrates Court yesterday police found 22 category A movies, six at category B and one at category C. There were three category C images and one extreme movie.

Interviewed, he told how he had been looking at spanking websites for about two years.

At first it involved adults but he then started talking to people on chat sites who referred him to other sites where children were being spanked. He progressed to watching images and films of children having sex with adults and with other children.

Roberts told how he had been speaking to teenage girls on the internet who had sent him images and he had also sent images of children being abused. He had tried to stop several times but always re-started.
