Bristol child molester has jail time cut
A pensioner jailed for molesting two young children in the 1960s has had his sentence cut by top judges.
John Langford abused a boy and a girl between 1960 and 1968, when both victims were aged under 14.
The 75-year-old was only brought to justice after his victims reported his crimes to police last year and he admitted three indecent assaults.
Langford, of Tregarth Road, Ashton Vale, Bristol, was locked up for five years at the city’s crown court in March.
But his jail term has now been cut to four years by judges sitting at the Court of Appeal, in London.
The court heard he first molested the boy, who was under 10 years old at the time, after a fishing trip in the early 1960s. Later, he inappropriately touched the girl, aged between 11 and 13, on two separate occasions.
His lawyers argued his jail term was too tough in light of his age and poor health.
The court heard he suffers from a potentially dangerous sleep disorder and other ailments.
They also said the crown court judge didn’t take enough account of the maximum sentences available at the time the crimes were committed.
Mr Justice Foskett, sitting with Lady Justice Hallett and Mr Justice Goss, allowed the appeal.
He ruled: “In our judgment, an overall sentence of four years would have been sufficient to meet the justice of the case.”
