Pervert found guilty of 17 sex offences against children and sentenced to 24 years in prison

A man has been jailed for 24 years for 17 sexual offences against four children including the attempted rape of a young girl.

After a 10-day trial at Guildford Crown Court, Paul Sinnick, of Sutton Gardens in Merstham, received a combined sentence of 52 years but, with some of those set to run consecutively, he will spend 24 years in prison.

The 53-year-old committed the sex attacks in Redhill with one of his victims being only three or four when the abuse began.

In total, he was found guilty of 13 counts of indecent assault on a female under 13; two counts of gross indecency with a girl under 16; one count of sexual assault on a girl under 13; and one count of attempted rape

Among the sentences, he received 10 years for the attempted rape between 1992 and 1998; six years for sexually assaulting a girl under 13 between 1992 and 1998; six years for indecent assault on a girl under 13 between those same dates; and two years for sexually assaulting a girl under 13 in March 2008.

During the trial, the court heard how Sinnick performed a sex act on a young girl then punched himself in the face in an “attack of self-loathing”. Prosecutor Alex Williams said he asked the girl if she knew what a particular sex act was before doing it to her.

Sinnick was also charged with two counts of rape of a girl under 16 but was found not guilty of one offence between July 2001 and July 2002 while the other remained inconclusive.

The jury was also unable to reach a verdict on one count of sexual assault by penetration of a girl under 13.

Last Thursday the jury heard from a young girl’s mother, who originally contacted the police in 2008 after he touched the girl’s private parts and encouraged her to touch his penis.

But it was considered by Surrey Police that there was not enough evidence to prosecute at that time.

Police were contacted again towards the end of 2014 by a member of staff who had been supporting the girl at her primary school.

The school employee said the girl had told her Sinnick had done “bad things to her, things he shouldn’t have done” when she was younger. He was arrested in April 2015 and charged in January 2016.

He has been sent to HMP High Down in Banstead. On top of the 24 years, he will spend a further three on licence and has been put on the sex offenders register.
