Paedophile who raped and sexually abused three boys is jailed for 18 years

A paedophile who systematically raped and sexually abused three young boys has been jailed for 18 years.

Keith Worthington raped one of his vulnerable victims after showering him with gifts, drugs and alcohol.

Liverpool Crown Court heard he then encouraged another child to watch porn before molesting him.

He raped the third boy while drunk – holding his hand over his mouth so no one could hear his screams.

The 47-year-old, formerly of Silkstone Street, St Helens, was found guilty of nine sexual offences after a trial.

Worthington, now of Prestwood Road, Dovecot, glared at two of his victims when he entered the dock this morning.

Arthur Gibson, prosecuting, said they did not wish to have their victim personal statements read out in court.

Judge Andrew Menary, QC, told Worthington: “Overall you are guilty of the systematic sexual exploitation and abuse of three young boys.

“Systematic in the sense that having abused one boy, you then moved onto the next boy, and then to the third.

“These offences have had a devastating impact on the lives of these young men and will continue to.”

The offences started decades ago, when Worthington invited the first boy to watch porn, then touched him inappropriately.

Judge Menary said: “Because of his age, he didn’t understand what you were doing.

“That and fear meant he didn’t tell anyone what had happened to him until he was much older. Sadly, he was not believed.”

In the meantime Worthington turned his attention to a boy who was vulnerable because of circumstances at home.

Judge Menary said: “He regularly missed school to spend time with you, sometimes staying overnight with you.

“You gave him presents. You also gave him alcohol and cannabis.

“As he described it, you gave him whatever he wanted – vodka, brandy and cans of beer – and he drank pretty much all of it.

“This was classic grooming behaviour, designed to buy his affections, and facilitate very serious sexual abuse of this boy.”

The court heard Worthington raped the child on two occasions, leaving him in pain, but too ashamed and afraid to report him.

He raped the third boy, holding his hand over his mouth so no one could hear him call out.

Judge Menary said: “He describes crying throughout these incidents.”

Judge Menary said the paedophile was not a man of previous good character.

He said: “Sadly, frankly, there is no evidence that your life has amounted to very much at all.”

The judge said Worthington was “an offender of particular concern” and would serve an additional year on licence.

This type of sentence means he will spend at least nine years in prison and only be released if a parole board decides he is no longer a risk.

Judge Menary said Worthington must sign on the Sex Offenders Register for life and comply with an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
