Babysitter did ‘untold harm’ to girl he abused
Child welfare campaigners have welcomed a 10-year sentence passed on a babysitter whose sexual abuse has left his victim with severe psychological damage.
Michael Ganney was told by a judge he had caused ‘untold harm’ to the girl who he sexually assaulted when she was a child.
The abuse took place more than a decade ago but the girl is still suffering from what happened to her and has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Ganney took advantage of the girl by going into her bedroom and touching her under her night clothes while her mother was out at bingo.
The NSPCC have welcomed the 10-year sentence which he received at Exeter Crown Court after being convicted by a jury earlier this month.
Ganney, aged 66, of The Esplanade, Weymouth, was found guilty of two counts of assault by penetration. He admitted one charge of sexual assault.
He was jailed for ten years by Judge Geoffrey Mercer, QC, who told him: “You abused this girl when you were left in charge of her by her mother. You caused that young girl untold harm.
“I have read her victim personal statement which tells how what you did has had a profound effect on her.”
During a four-day trial the jury heard how Ganney befriended the girl’s mother while carrying out work on her rented home in the early 2000s.
He was asked to look after the girl while her mother was out at bingo and went into her room where he touched her under the bedclothes while touching himself with his other hand.
The girl did not tell her mother at the time and made her first disclosure to a boyfriend when she was aged about 18. He persuaded her to tell her mother, who took her to see the police.
Ganney admitted he had put his hand inside the girl’s underwear on one occasion when he had been drinking and they were ‘larking about’.
He denied all the other assaults and said he when he was babysitting he would put his head around the door to check on the girl, but never gone inside. He denied sitting on her bed or putting his hand inside her night clothes.
