Violent pervert is jailed for four years

AN AIRDRIE sex pervert who assaulted three young children and sexually abused a teenage girl, has been jailed for four years.

Thomas McConnell (49) pleaded guilty to a catalogue of brutality towards the children over an 11 year period, and subjected a 16-year-old girl to a sexual act in a house in the town.

Airdrie Sheriff Court heard how McConnell, of Wellside Avenue, Thrashbush, admitted beating up a girl on various occasions, when she was between the ages of 11 and 22, at his home and also at a flat within the Thrashbush Homeless Unit in Thrashbush Road on various occasions between August 14, 1995 and March 13, 2006.

Sheriff Petra Collins heard how he dragged and pulled her by the hair, repeatedly struck her about the body with a belt, repeatedly threw cups, shoes, jars and forks at her, struck her on the head and body, repeatedly punched and slapped her and kicked her on the head and body.

McConnell also carried out a series of attacks on another girl between July 28 1997 and March 13, 2006 at his home.

He repeatedly struck the girl about the body with a belt, threw cups, glasses and a fork at her, striking her on the head and body.

The same girl, the court then heard, was knocked unconscious on Christmas Eve, 2005, when he struck her on the head with a tumbler.

He then sexually abused the same girl between January 6 and 29, 2006, when she was 16.

McConnell, the court was then told, assaulted a boy from the age of seven until he was 18, between August 14, 1995 and March 13, 2006.

He repeatedly struck the young boy about the body with a belt and shoes, threw forks at him which struck him on the head and body before slapping and kicking him on the head and body.

The attacks again happened at his home and the nearby Homeless Unit.

Social workers classed him as a medium risk of re-offending.

Sheriff Collins added: “You have pled guilty to repeated attacks on these three children and to the sexual abuse of one of them. You and you alone are responsible for finding yourself in the position you are in. These offences are so grave that only custody is merited.”

McConnell was jailed for four years and also put on the Sex Offenders’ Register for an indefinite period.
