Man who had 4,500 child abuse images has sentence cut by judges

A Nottingham window fitter caught with a huge stash of child pornography had his jail term cut by top judges.

Alex Waplington had almost 4,500 sickening images stored on his computer equipment – including more than 1,000 in the most obscene category .

The pictures and videos featured children, some aged under five, being subjected to horrific abuse and some of the images included animals.

The 27-year-old, of Baythorn Road, Bilborough was locked up for three years at Nottingham Crown Court in March.

He admitted possessing indecent and prohibited images of children.

But his sentence was today cut to two years by judges sitting at the Court of Appeal, who ruled the original term was “too long”.

The court heard police searched Waplington’s home in September last year and seized equipment, including a laptop computer.

Analysis revealed 4,463 indecent images – including 348 films – were stored on it.

Mr Justice Lavender said: “Waplington contributed indirectly to the abuse of babies and toddlers by providing a market for those who produce such sickening images.”

Sitting at the Appeal Court with Lord Justice Davis and Sir Nicholas Blake, the judge said Waplington deserved to go to prison.

However, his original sentence was excessive in light of his admission of guilt and previous clean record.
