Dramatic court room plea change for man who abused youths
A SEX abuser was locked up yesterday after admitting 12 charges.
Paedophile Paul Williams, 50, of East Avenue, Cefn Cribwr, Bridgend had previously denied the claims made by his two victims.
But when they turned up at Cardiff Crown Court to give evidence against him, he changed his mind, moments before a jury was due to be sworn in to try him.
He pleaded guilty to charges of indecency with a child and indecent assault – offences committed over a period of 10 years.
The judge, Recorder John Jenkins QC had refused to give Williams any indication of what his sentence would be, before he agreed to plead guilty, saying he would want to see victim impact statements from the complainants before doing that.
But he told him after the guilty pleas were entered that prison was inevitable.
The Recorder refused an application that Williams be allowed to remain on bail and spend time with his elderly mother, while reports are prepared on him before sentence.
“These are serious offences and I don’t think bail would be appropriate,” he said.
Prosecutor Peter Davies said the police would be seeking a Sexual Offences Prevention Order against Williams to prevent any future offending when he is released from prison.
He will also have his name put on the Sex Offenders’ Register.
