New Romney child rapist jailed for life
A “chilling” child rapist who subjected a toddler to more than two years of abuse in New Romney has been jailed for life
Barry Gibbens, 52, of Oldfield Avenue in Eastbourne, was deplored by the judge at Canterbury Crown Court for committing the most “violent indiginities” imaginable against his victim, who was “young, impressionable and trusting”.
Despite filming much of the abuse, Gibbens denied all twelve charges against him involving rape, sexual assault, causing a child to engage in sexual activity and taking 82 of the most serious indecent pictures a child, but was found guilty by a jury at trial.
The abuse took place between May 2013 and November 2015 on the bed Gibbens shared with his partner when he was living in New Romney.
The court heard how the abuse of the girl was filmed and uploaded onto his computer, where he stored other sick images of children.
Sentencing, Judge Simon James condemned Gibbens for his complete “lack of remorse” and “empathy” for the little girl, as well as “blaming others”.
He said: “You have been convicted of sexual offences of the utmost seriousness.
“As a toddler at the time of the offence, the abuse involved you raping her and a whole host of sexual activity.
“Your abuse of her was filmed and uploaded to your computer.
“The abuse of this little girl’s trust is chilling and calculated.”
The judge went on to say that it was “impossible to imagine offending of a greater capacity” and what the full effect will be on Gibbens’ victim.
He went on: “Your victim was young, impressionable and trusting.
“Having watched the violent indignities you perpetrated and your state of denial, your sentence to protect the public is one of life imprisonment.”
Gibbens must serve a minimum of 15 years in prison before he is able to apply for release.
