Paedophile found guilty of rape and having child abuse images

Victims of a paedophile who was found guilty of rape and having child sexual abuse images on his phone have been praised for their bravery by the police.

Paul Cook, 24, of Scorrier Road in Redruth, was found guilty in the summer of one count of rape, three counts of sexual activity with a child and five counts of possession of indecent images of children on his phone.

On Friday (December 8) he was sentenced to seven years in prison, of which he must serve two thirds. He will also be subject of a licence period of another five years.

During the trial, Nigel Wraith told Truro Crown Court that Cook knew the first victim, from Camborne, through a friend.

Mr Wraith said: “The first victim had known Paul Cook and he was well aware of her age. The two were sat together and started hugging and kissing which then led to full, unprotected sex.

“It was the first time she had had sex.”

Mr Wraith added that the two then had sex on further occasions at a house in Camborne and at a nearby mine.

The first victim eventually went to the police in May 2016 after a relative confronted Cook.

The second victim, who went to police in August 2016, was also said to have met Cook through friends and she told police she was impressed with his six-pack and thought he was cute.

Mr Wraith said: “They kissed and then Mr Cook got his penis out and asked her to masturbate him which she did. He (committed a further sexual act) and asked for sex but she said ‘no’ and that he must wait until she was 16.”

Mr Wraith said that despite her initial resistance it wasn’t long before they started to have sex and on one occasion Cook allegedly forced his penis into the girl’s mouth, resulting in the rape charge.

“She wasn’t exactly keen on the sexual relationship but went along with it anyway,” added Mr Wraith. “She reluctantly agreed to have sex as she didn’t want to be seen as frigid.”
