Former Scout leader jailed 12 years for sex offences
A 72-year-old former Scout leader, who carried out a series of sex assaults on a young girl, has been jailed for 12 years and placed on the sex offenders register for life.
Frederick Galley, of Sluice Road, Denver, admitted 11 counts of indecent assault on the girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons.
The abuse took place more than 30 years ago but the victim only recently came forward to make a complaint after she suffered a complete breakdown, Norwich Crown Court heard.
Andrew Oliver, prosecuting, said: “She kept these events secret until she suffered a breakdown.”
He said that she then underwent counselling about what had happened in her past which led to her finally coming forward to make a complaint about Galley.
He said that when police arrested Galley they found searches had been made on his computer, which suggested he still had a sexual interest in young girls.
The complainant, who read out her own victim statement from the witness box, was praised by Judge Stephen Holt for her “huge courage” in facing Galley in court.
He told Galley: “You have totally devastated her life. I have huge admiration for the courage she has to face you in court. I hope her words will remain with you.”
Judge Holt said that the victim had desperately wanted to tell someone about what happened in the past but was not able to do so until she was an adult and went through counselling.
He said there had been an element of grooming in his behaviour towards the girl but accepted that he had now shown remorse and deserved full credit for his guilty pleas.
He said that he had spared the victim the ordeal of coming to court .
“At least you have spared her the embarrassment and difficulty of giving evidence in court.”
Judge Holt told Galley that he would well into his 80s by the time he was released from his sentence.
