Maths tutor jailed for sexually abusing children

A private maths tutor has been jailed for five and a half years for a string of sexual offences committed against young girls at his home address in Tooting.

Peter John Hogan, 70 (22.03.49) of Brudenell Road, Tooting was sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on Monday, 23 September after being found guilty, by a majority verdict, on 9 August following a 14 day trial.

He was found guilty of the following:

  • •Four counts of sexual assault of a girl under 13 (aged between 9 and 12);

    •One count of sexual activity with a child over 13;

    •Two counts of indecent assault of a child under 14 (victim was 8-years-old)

Hogan has been issued with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) preventing him from having any unsupervised contact with people under 18 and he will be subject to Sex Offender Registration for life.

The court heard how Hogan carried out the sexual abuse whilst working as a private maths tutor. The victims were aged between eight and 13-years-old at the time of the assaults.

Detectives in the Met’s Child Abuse and Sexual Offences (CASO) unit began an investigation in June 2016 after one of the victims, a 13-year-old girl, reported the incident to a teacher. She was abused over a three-year period at Hogan’s home address, whilst being taught maths.

Subsequent police enquiries revealed a further victim, now in her late 20s, who was approached and willing to assist police in this investigation. She was around eight-years-old at the time of the abuse, which occurred between 1995 and 1996.

Hogan was arrested in June 2016, in police interview he denied the allegations of sexual abuse.

On 16 January he was charged with four counts of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching, one count of offender 18 or over engage in non-penetrative sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 to 15 and two counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14 years-old.

On 18 March Hogan pleaded not guilty to all the offences at Kingston Crown Court.
