Man jailed for the rape and assault of a woman in Rugby
A man has been jailed for the rape and assault of a woman in Rugby in March.
Darren Callaghan, 49, of Bonchurch Road, Southsea, Hampshire, was convicted at Warwick Crown Court of rape, assault and administering a substance with the intent to stupefy or overpower in order to allow sexual activity.
On Tuesday (10 December) he was sentenced to 16 years in prison with a further five years served on licence.
Callaghan met the victim via a dating app. He travelled from his home and they went for a drink.
The court heard Callaghan drugged the victim before carrying out a vicious assault and raping her, causing a significant number of injuries to her arms, legs and face.
When the victim woke up the next morning with only vague memories of the night before, Callaghan insisted she had been possessed by a demon.
She reported the ordeal to police and Callaghan was arrested at his home a few days later.
