Sex offender jailed after systematic abuse of girl which destroyed her childhood

A sex offender systematically abused a young girl over a period of seven years following prolonged grooming and exploitation.

The victim was left anxious, tearful, isolated and frightened after suffering extreme damage from the “perverted” offender, a court heard.

He had sexually assaulted her on at least 11 occasions and she was powerless to resist because of his bullying

Jason Hickling, 43, of Frodingham Road, Scunthorpe admitted six offences of sexual activity with a child and another of engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child.

Michael Greenhalgh, prosecuting, told Grimsby Crown Court that Hickling had sexually assaulted the girl on a series of occasions after taking advantage of her in Scunthorpe.

He also touched her intimately and behaved in a sexual way in her presence.

The abuse had a serious effect on the girl and had caused problems for her in her dealings with other people.

She was frightened that people would think it was all her fault and had suffered from anxiety and suicidal thoughts.

“She was anxious constantly about what had happened to her,” said Mr Greenhalgh.

“She doesn’t know if she will ever move on from what has happened. It’s always there.

“She is tearful regularly. It plays over in her mind very often.”

Judge Ahmed Nadim told Hickling: “You engaged in systematic abuse that escalated in its seriousness with the passage of time.

“Your offending spanned a period of seven years. You did not use any form of contraception.

“You reported yourself to police by making a telephone call.

“It was not done because you were riven by guilt and motivated by remorse but by the feeling that the game was up and you were about to be reported to the authorities.”

The girl had suffered “extreme damage” through Hickling’s “perverted” grooming and exploitation.

“Her desperation was such that she seriously thought about taking her life,” said Judge Nadim.

Hickling was jailed for eight-and-a-half years and was given an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.

He must register as a sex offender for life.
