Paedophile jailed over haul of devices that left manager ‘extremely concerned’

A convicted Derbyshire sex offender who was supposed to tell police what he used to access the internet failed to disclose he had 29 such devices at his home.

Derby Crown Court heard how Mark Kennard was handed a suspended sentence in November 2018 after being caught with horrific child abuse images.

The 56-year-old, of Swadlincote, also admitted sharing some of them with other paedophiles.

The aircraft mechanic was also handed a sexual harm prevention order as part of his punishment, the terms of which were that he had to tell the police about any electronic devices he owned which were capable of logging him in online.

But on four occasions this year, when his offender manager went to his address, Kennar had such devices without the police’s knowledge.

When one of them was analysed it was found that whoever had used it had accessed websites where abuse images could be obtained.

And since being spared immediate custody, those who supervise him say they are concerned about his attraction to children and that he is not doing enough to address the root cause of his offending.

Jailing Kennard for 21 months, Judge Shaun Smith QC said: “On January 14 someone from the probation service thought you had been accessing indecent images and so the police went to your address.

“They took away a large number of devices you should have told them you had but didn’t.

“But what is more concerning for me is your attitude towards your suspended sentence order.

“I have heard from those who supervise you who tell me they think you are trying to con them by lying to them about your involvement in the treatment programs they are providing for you.

“They are extremely concerned about your sexual attraction to children and you are not doing anything to address it.

“You are being deceptive to your offender manager.”

Catherine Picardo, prosecuting, said on four occasions this year – three in January and most recently on June 25, Kennard, of Clifton Close, has been found with devices that enable him to get online.

She said on the last occasion his brother, who he lives with, said the iPad was his and that he allowed the defendant to use it.

But when police analysed the iCloud address of the defendant on the device it showed someone had been looking at pornographic dating sites.

Kennard pleased guilty to four counts of breaching his sexual harm prevention order.

November 2018: Received a suspended jail sentence.

He has been made the subject of a 12-month jail sentence suspended for 24 months and a 10-year sexual harm prevention order. He will also pay £1,000 court costs.
