Paedophile who travelled 100 miles to meet teen for sex jailed
A man who travelled 100 miles from Wiltshire to West Sussex to meet what he thought was a teenage girl for sex has been jailed for three years.
Nigel McDermott, a builder’s merchant, was arrested by police in a car park in Tilgate Park in Crawley on February 12th.
He had made the journey after chatting to the girl, who he believed to be 13, online.
She was actually a police officer and police enquiries confirmed that no child was at risk.
53-year-old McDermott, of Hawks Ridge in Harnham, just outside Salisbury, pleaded guilty to facilitating a child sexual offence.
At Hove Crown Court last Tuesday, he was given a three-year prison sentence.
McDermott will be a registered sex offender and was given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order severely restricting his access to children and computers, both to last until further court notice.
The prosecution, authorised by the CPS, followed an intelligence-led investigation by the Sussex Police Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT), working closely with the South East Regional Organised Crime Unit (SEROCU).
