Former Redcar steelworks employee jailed for 12 years after raping child as she slept
A former Redcar steelworks employee who plied a child with alcohol and raped her while she was asleep has been jailed for 12 years.
David Mewse ordered the underage girl to drink two glasses of red wine before attacking her while she was unconscious.
Teesside Crown Court heard how the young girl froze in shock after waking up to find the 49-year-old raping her.
John Cleasby, prosecuting, said: “She did not move and said nothing, the child was immersed in shock at what was happening to her.”
Mr Cleasby told the court in Middlesbrough how Mewse also took indecent image of the victim.
He said the offences came to light when the girl told her friend’s mother about the attack.
In a statement, read to the court by the girl, she said: “I’m a different person now, I get angry very quickly, I look at my friends and I know I’m different to them.
“Whatever punishment he gets will never be enough because I will be suffering for the rest of my life and nothing can change that.”
Mewse, of Queen Street, Redcar, admitted rape and taking indecent photographs of a child.
Judge Deborah Sherwin sentenced Mewse to 12 years behind bars for the rape.
She ordered him to serve 12 months in prison, which will be served at the same time, for the indecent photographs.
Judge Sherwin also handed him a sexual harm prevention order until further notice
She told Mewse: “It’s clear to me she has been extremely traumatised as a result of what you did to her.”
