Cowardly paedophile raped child then called her a liar

A cowardly paedophile who raped a young girl claimed she was a liar – then didn’t show up for his trial.

Edward Martin, 67, groomed and sexually abused the helpless child in Wirral and Knowsley in the 1970s.

The pervert, who was in his 20s at the time, even molested his frightened victim in front of another child.

The abuse culminated in him ordering the girl to undress and when she refused, him stripping and raping her.

The now adult woman, whose life was ruined, found the courage to contact police in 2017 after counselling

Martin, of Oxton Road, Birkenhead, claimed she was a liar and was set to stand trial on January 20 this year.

But when the trial was delayed due to an issue with his legal representation, he skipped court the next day.

Martin was arrested but denied breaching bail and a new trial date was fixed for July, then adjourned to August.

He finally confessed this week, then claimed he was sorry to his victim for the abuse and prolonging her ordeal.

Judge Neil Flewitt, QC, said: “I find it difficult to accept that you have any real remorse for what you have done.”

Liverpool Crown Court heard Martin first abused the girl after asking her if she had ever kissed anyone.

Gareth Roberts, prosecuting, said she replied “no”, so he asked if she was curious what it was like, and she said: “Not really.”

Martin kissed the child, later doing it again and putting his tongue in her mouth, which happened at least 15 times, including in the presence of another child.

Mr Roberts said: “She felt disgusted. She felt she was somehow to blame herself. She was scared if she screamed or told anyone it would be her who would be blamed for what was going on.”

When alone together, Martin showed the girl pornographic magazines and asked her to read them to him.

He once exposed himself to her and groped up her skirt, then on another occasion touched her privates.

Mr Roberts said: “She describes herself as freezing as this was going on.”

The court heard the girl once refused his order to remove her clothes, but “she remembers he became enraged”.

Martin raped the crying victim – who described being left in agony – then warned her not to tell anyone.

Mr Roberts said Martin told police “nothing had happened and she was making it all up – essentially calling her a liar.”

The victim found it difficult to make friends and form intimate relationships and was left “paranoid about men and having men around her children”.

She was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and her life has been blighted by drinking and depression.

However, in a victim statement, the woman also said she hoped her abuser would now get help.

Martin, who has no previous convictions, admitted rape, three counts of indecent assault and breach of bail.

Addressing credit for his guilty pleas, Judge Flewitt said this must be reduced because “he’s prolonged the agony of the witnesses”.

Judge Flewitt said Martin groomed his victim for the worst abuse to come by kissing her, adding: “Those were not innocent kisses, they were indecent assaults.”

He said the victim’s statement “describes in the most compelling terms the profound damage done by your offending”.

The judge added: “I have no doubt you have caused her severe psychological harm.”

Judge Flewitt said Martin was an “offender of particular concern” and jailed him for 14 years and three months, with an extended year on licence.

This means he will spend at least half of the sentence – around seven years – behind bars, before he is eligible to apply for parole.

He must sign on the Sex Offenders Register for life.
