Pervert Derby granddad jailed for having sick images and videos

A vile granddad from Derby had nearly 9,000 images of extreme sex abuse images and more than 150 indecent images of children.

Police officerssearched the address of Mark Vernon, from Chaddesden, back in September 2018, seizing a laptop, hard drive and a phone.

Derby Crown Court heard how cops found thousands of the sickening images, as well as 152 indecent images of children from all three categories of seriousness.

The hearing revealed the offending took place over a four-year period and found that the 44-year-old had also installed deletion software.

Recorder Mark Watson, who presided over the case, deemed the offences so serious, he imposed an immediate custodial sentence.

He said: “On September 19, 2018 police officers attended your home address in Derby and took a number of devices.

“Examination of three of these devices showed the presence of indecent images of children and extreme pornographic images.

“It is said on your behalf this offending is out of character. You had no previous convictions. This was offending which took place over four years.

“There is presence of deletion software.

“You were interviewed. Although you accepted responsibility that was not, in my judgement, a full confession.

“You have a family of your own, you have been in a relationship for 25 years, you have a job, you have never been in trouble and a positive good character.

“I do take into account the impact on your family, I have to balance that with my duty.

“This is not a victimless crime, it is quite the opposite and you, and people like you, provide the market for these images. Whilst this market exists, more children will be abused.

“Extreme porn has it’s own victims.

“Given you failed to properly admit your responsibility, given in particular the seriousness the punishment is an immediate custodial sentence.”

The court heard police searched Vernon’s house on September 19, 2018.

Nicholas Dear, prosecuting, said: “This defendant pleaded guilty to four charges at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on August 14.

“This included possession of indecent images A, B and C and extreme images. Police attended his home address due to a report of unlawful downloading at that address.

“Police took away a number of items including a in particular an external hard drive, a laptop and phone.”

The court heard Vernon had 55 category A images, the most serious category, 33 from category B and 64 from category C. The court heard Vernon also had 8,692 extreme images.

Of the images from category A, 25 were videos, 21 were videos from B and 35 were videos from C and from the extreme files, 2,952 were videos.

Vernon, of Lenton Avenue, Chaddesden, Derby, pleaded guilty to three charges of making of indecent images and one charge of possession of extreme pornography.

His total sentence was 12 months’ imprisonment. He must sign the sex offenders register for 10 years, he is subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention order and he is barred from working with children or vulnerable adults.

An order of forfeiture and destruction of all laptops, phones and hard drives was made and he had to pay a victim surcharge of £100.
