Rapist jailed after targeting teenager
A cowardly rapist who went on the run for four years after he targeted a teenage schoolgirl has been jailed.
Karl Wishart was finally snared by police in March this year after going on the run following an arrest for rape in 2016.
The 41-year-old had been accused of targeting the teenage girl at an address in Newcastle in December of that year.
It was alleged that Wishart, who was in a relationship with another woman at the time, had forced himself on his victim against her will.
He denied any sexual contact with the girl when questioned by police but after being released on bail he disappeared.
Officers launched an investigation to locate him and released his picture in the press in a bid to bring him back into custody.
And eventually those enquiries led officers to an address in Blakelaw in March where he was staying with his former partner.
Wishart was arrested and charged with rape and sexual activity with a child but he pleaded not guilty and the case went to trial.
He was convicted by a jury and on Monday Wishart, of Colwyne Place, Blakelaw, was jailed for ten years at Newcastle Crown Court.
As well as the custodial sentence, a judge ordered Wishart to sign the sex offenders register for life.
He was also made subject to a sexual harm prevention order.
