Huddersfield paedophile sexually abused 13-year-old girl who later became suicidal
A paedophile who sexually abused a child who later became suicidal has been sentenced to three years.
Matthew Whiteley was aged 27 when he groomed the 13-year-old and performed sex acts on her between 2009 and 2010.
The 37-year-old, of Church Street, Paddock, Huddersfield, was sentenced today (Wednesday) after pleading guilty to sexual activity with a child.
Prosecutor Michael Greenhalgh said the victim went to police as an adult and reported that Whiteley had performed sex acts on her when she was underage.
He said the woman later withdrew her support for the prosecution, saying she wanted to move on with her life, and the prosecution pursued the case on Whiteley’s own admissions.
In his police interview, Whiteley had said he knew the victim when she was aged 13 and he was aged 27
He told officers that he had kissed her ‘out of the blue’ one day in his house and told her he liked her as ‘more than a friend’ before starting a ‘relationship’ with her.
A few weeks later, the victim called it off, saying it was wrong.
A few weeks after that, she said she wanted to try again and they began seeing each other again.
Whiteley admitted penetrating the girl’s vagina with his fingers on a number of occasions.
He said he had spoken to the teenager about ‘settling down’ and having children when she finished school.
She later ended the relationship, saying she did not love him anymore.
He said he ‘took the hint and left her alone’ and did not see her again until a few months later when he slept with her mother.
A couple of years later, Whiteley was given a community order for having indecent images of children.
Although there was no victim personal statement provided, the court was told the abuse caused severe harm to the victim who went on to have chronic psychological problems involving an attempt to take her own life and inpatient treatment.
