Paedophile with ‘appalling’ child rape videos spared jail

A paedophile with ‘appalling’ child rape videos today walked free from court.

Anthony Dean owned 1,542 child abuse pictures and videos, which included footage of children as young as eight being raped.

He even owned an unofficial ‘paedophile expansion pack’ for PC game The Sims.

Dean, of Waring Avenue, St Helens, was charged with three counts of making indecent images of children – which included 555 images of child rape.

He was also charged with possessing the images.

The 30-year-old shielded his face as he left Liverpool Crown Court.

Alaric Walmsley, prosecuting, said that on Friday 26 July, 2019, officers from the National Crime Agency attended at his address where “indecent images of children had been accessed”.

They found Dean “alone in his bedroom” and he claimed “I’ve only been looking at websites, I didn’t download”.

Officers asked him what they would find on the computer tower on his bedroom floor and he said “You will find the young, the younger about 15, I might as well be honest I’m not going to lie to you”.

But when they searched it there were images of children as young as eight being raped.

He told officers he “thought he had a problem”, “needed help” and said he was remorseful.

Mr Walmsley explained that after examining the computer tower they discovered on July 10, 2017 he searched for “pre teen girls”.

He said: “Also of note was an unofficial expansion pack for The Sims.”

The game allows players to control characters, develop structures and carry out everyday activities such as going to work or school.

Unofficial expansion packs to the game are made by third parties and not linked to or endorsed by the game’s makers.

Mr Walmsley said: “The unofficial expansion pack was the paedophile pack. It’s assumed it allows the user to carry out the act of a paedophile.”

The court heard one of the videos was 16 minutes and 16 seconds long and showed a “young girl” being raped.

Judge Driver said it was a “substantial quantity” of images which included “images of children as young as eight undergoing dreadful ordeals”.

Dean was handed an 12 month sentence suspended for 18 months and must complete 15 Rehabilitation Activity Requirements.

He was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for 10 years and made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for the same period.
