Paedophile, 66, jailed for 19 years after repeatedly raping girl
A paedophile who repeatedly raped a girl has been jailed for 19 years.
Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard Brian Moynihan left his victim so traumatised that she tried to take her own life
The 66-year-old, of Chapel Street, Silverdale, was convicted by a jury of 12 counts of rape and two indecent assaults following a trial in January. He had denied all the offences.
Now he has been told he cannot be considered for parole for at least nine years.
Peter Cooper, prosecuting, said the latest offences bore similarities to two previous convictions for indecent assault in the 1970s.
On those occasions, he had forced young girls to lie down and remove their clothing before touching them. He had served a prison term for one of the indecent assaults, but was given a probation order for the other offence.
His latest victim was molested as a child at several locations.
The jury was told he would threaten her and sometimes beat her if she didn’t comply. He also muffled her cries as he assaulted her.
His depraved acts included forcing her to have oral sex with him and stripping off her clothes.
Sentencing him, Judge Paul Glenn said Moynihan had left the girl ‘severely damaged’ as a result of the sexual abuse.
He added: “You told her not to tell anyone, or ‘if you do, you’ll pay’. ”
Moynihan’s 19-year term will include 18 years in prison and one year on licence. He will only be released earlier if the Parole Board recommends he is no longer detained.
In a victim personal statement, she said: “I started to self-harm from an early age to try to cut the dirt I was feeling out of me.”
Even to this day, she will take repeated baths in an attempt to ‘feel clean’ and ‘can go for days without sleeping, eating or drinking’.
“The flashbacks would become overwhelming,” she recalled. “I can still smell the smells. They are all around me, constantly reminding me of what he did to me.
“Every day, I have blamed myself, thinking it must have been me. I feel like I’ve led a prison sentence and continue to do so.”
She added: “The question, why me? What did I do to deserve this? I know now I will never find the answer.”
North Staffordshire paedophile convicted of 12 rapes faces ‘lengthy’ jail term
A paedophile who repeatedly raped a girl and muffled her cries as he assaulted her has been warned he faces a lengthy prison term.
Sixty-six-year-old Brian Moynihan was found guilty of 12 counts of rape and two of indecent assault following a trial
A jury at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court was told she finally plucked up courage to report the matter to the police decades later after telling someone what had happened.
Peter Cooper, prosecuting, said the defendant molested her at several different locations.
“These offences would often follow a pattern,” Mr Cooper told the jury. “If she didn’t comply, he would threaten her and sometimes beat her.
“She was sometimes tearful and pleaded with him not to do things.”
Moynihan would also force her to have oral sex with him and made her strip off her clothes.
At his trial, the defendant, of Chapel Street, Silverdale, claimed the incidents never happened and he denied all 14 charges.
Following the verdicts, Paul Cliff, defending, asked for a pre-sentence report to be prepared by a probation officer.
Judge Paul Glenn agreed to the request and adjourned the case.
But he said: “Obviously, custody is inevitable – and lengthy custody.
“But it has been a long time since the offences were committed. It has been a long time since he’s been before a court and I ought to take account of what the probation service can tell me about his personal circumstances.”
Moynihan has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register ahead of the sentencing hearing
