North Staffordshire paedophile convicted of 12 rapes faces ‘lengthy’ jail term
A paedophile who repeatedly raped a girl and muffled her cries as he assaulted her has been warned he faces a lengthy prison term.
Sixty-six-year-old Brian Moynihan was found guilty of 12 counts of rape and two of indecent assault following a trial
A jury at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court was told she finally plucked up courage to report the matter to the police decades later after telling someone what had happened.
Peter Cooper, prosecuting, said the defendant molested her at several different locations.
“These offences would often follow a pattern,” Mr Cooper told the jury. “If she didn’t comply, he would threaten her and sometimes beat her.
“She was sometimes tearful and pleaded with him not to do things.”
Moynihan would also force her to have oral sex with him and made her strip off her clothes.
At his trial, the defendant, of Chapel Street, Silverdale, claimed the incidents never happened and he denied all 14 charges.
Following the verdicts, Paul Cliff, defending, asked for a pre-sentence report to be prepared by a probation officer.
Judge Paul Glenn agreed to the request and adjourned the case.
But he said: “Obviously, custody is inevitable – and lengthy custody.
“But it has been a long time since the offences were committed. It has been a long time since he’s been before a court and I ought to take account of what the probation service can tell me about his personal circumstances.”
Moynihan has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register ahead of the sentencing hearing
