Bolton man admits sexual relationship with 14-year-old mother of his child

A Bolton man has admitted having a baby with a 14-year-old girl

Appearing at Bolton Crown Court for sentencing after pleading guilty to three counts of sexual activity with a child, Steven Bradbury, 36, initially denied the baby was his before DNA testing proved otherwise.

David Bentley, prosecuting, said in February 2019, a woman told police in Sussex she had become pregnant as a result of sexual intercourse with Bradbury in Bolton aged just 14.

The woman gave birth in 2005, but Bradbury refused to acknowledge the child was his and he had not had any contact with her or the child since she moved away from Bolton 15 years ago.

Mr Bentley told the court: “She reached a point in her life when she felt it was time to report what had happened.

“She knew that it was wrong and also felt let down by the inaction of her parents at the time to deal with the situation appropriately.”

The woman told officers that aged 12, she had run away from home, began taking drugs and met Bradbury when she was 13 and he was 21.

The pair became close and began a sexual relationship for about four months after which the girl was taken into care by social services and found out she was pregnant.

Bradbury, of Platt Hill Avenue, told police officers he did not know the girl’s age but insisted the relationship was consensual.

In a victim impact statement read to the court by Mr Bentley, the woman said: “I would hope other people get the help they deserve if they are in my position.”

Passing sentence, Judge Graeme Smith said he had noted the disparity in age between the pair.

Bradbury was given a 22-month suspended prison term with 160 hours community service. He must sign the sex offenders register for 10 years.
