Edinburgh paedophile caught with images of babies being abused
A paedophile who was caught with nearly 1000 horrific child abuse images – including newborn babies being sexually attacked – has been jailed.
Kenneth Reid, 59, downloaded a disturbing stash of pictures and images of children being raped and who were described as being in “discernible pain and stress”.
Depraved Reid was also found to have collected vile pornographic videos depicting children being forced to engage in sexual activity with animals when police raided his Edinburgh home last year.
The pervert, from Sighthill, Edinburgh, then shared some of his sick collection by sending them to fellow sickos through a WhatsApp group.
Reid admitted possessing 787 images and 114 movies when he appeared via video link at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last year and he appeared in the dock in person for sentencing yesterday. (FRI)
Sheriff Douglas Keir said the offences committed by Reid were “abhorrent” and caged him for 20 months and placed him on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years.
Sheriff Keir added: “The charges you have pleaded to are very serious and some are of the most serious category of images involving children who are newborn to 14-years-old.
“Each video represents the serious abuse of a child in them, and as user of this sort of material you bear the responsibility for the abuse by creating the demand for it.”
Previously the court was told police raided Reid’s home at Larbourfield in Edinburgh on August 28 last year after receiving intelligence about images being downloaded at the address.
Prosecutor Clare Kennedy said “a number of devices were recovered and were subsequently examined” and cyber-crime officers discovered a total of 787 still images and 114 movies.
The fiscal added hundreds of the images and films were rated as Category A – the most depraved end of the spectrum.
Ms Kennedy said: “The age ranges of the children involved in the images ranged from newborn infants to 14-year-old children.“There is noted in the report that there is discernible pain and stress suffered by the children in the images and the videos.“Some of the files showed sexual activity involving children and animals and several of the files involved infants being forcibly penetrated by adults.
“As regards distribution, the images were distributed through WhatsApp – a total of 22 image files and 33 video files.”
Lawyer Rebecca Weissgerber, defending, said her client “accepted full responsibility” for his crimes and he has now “lost the support of his family due to this case”.
Reid pleaded guilty to possessing indecent images of children between January 1, 2015 and August 28 last year at his home.
He also admitted distributing images to others between September 29 and November 26, 2019
Reid was also jailed for 12 months and supervised for three years on release at Livingston Sheriff Court after admitting possessing indecent images of children in 2010.
He had downloaded almost 900 images and had shared pictures of girls aged between six months and 15 years with fellow perverts.
He was snared after officers connected to Operation Amethyst had recovered information from online paedophile discussions and chat room logs.
