Paedophile’s brave victim speaks of how abuse blighted her life

The victim of a paedophile pensioner has said that she hopes her case will give other sexual assault victims the strength to speak out.

Anthony Martin’s abuse left the victim feeling isolated, confused and dirty and it had a marked effect on her life.

Martin, 74, of Crantock Street in Newquay, appeared at Truro Crown Court for sentence having been convicted after a trial of four indecent assault charges.

Prosecuting the case, Emily Cook told the court the victim was aged under 14 at the time. Ms Cook described how Martin touched and digitally penetrated the girl’s genitals.

She was left shocked and frozen and Martin also touched her hand and placed it on his erect penis and forced her to masturbate him.

He told the girl it was their secret and that she mustn’t tell anyone.

Disgustingly, Martin also put his tongue into the girl’s mouth.

At Martin’s sentencing hearing, the brave victim read an impact statement to Martin and the court.

She said: “I was only a young girl and at first didn’t know what he was doing was sexual. I just knew it was wrong. I was scared, nervous and petrified.

“I was told to keep it a secret which I couldn’t understand as I never kept secrets from my parents before. I couldn’t understand what I had done wrong. I felt isolated and alone as I had nobody to turn to.

“He violated my innocence and as I feared him I remained silent. I froze in fear when these things happened.

“I tried to forget about it for years. I didn’t enjoy my school life and didn’t have many friends as I didn’t want anyone close to me. I struggled when anything sexual came on the TV and still find it difficult being around anyone when they are talking about sexual things.

“This has haunted me every day since he abused me. He took advantage of my innocence and vulnerability and sapped my self-confidence but now I know I’m not to blame.

“I feel angry at what he took from me and it took all my strength to report it, but when I did I felt a sense of relief straight away. After the process I now possess a sense of freedom and courage.

“I’m no longer afraid and hope my bravery will give other victims of abuse the strength to speak out. This will be a life sentence for me and will never go away.”

Representing Martin, Piers Norsworthy described how Martin suffers from health complications and his time in prison will be more difficult than it would be for a younger, healthier man.

Sentencing, Recorder Christopher Quinlan, QC, said he was sentencing Martin for four different methods of indecent assault.

Martin was jailed for three years and two months, of which he must serve half.

Justice catches up with old pervert paedophile 30 years after abusing young girl

An ageing pervert has been convicted of the sexual touching of a young girl more than 30 years ago.

Anthony Martin, 74, told the victim that she mustn’t tell her parents and that the abuse was their secret.

Martin, of Crantock Street in Newquay, had been on trial at Truro Crown Court this week charged with a series of indecent assaults which took place in the 1980s.

Following a period of deliberation Martin was convicted of four indecent assault charges.

Prosecuting the case, Emily Cook told the court the victim was aged under 14 at the time. Ms Cook described how Martin touched and digitally penetrated the girl’s genitals.

She was left shocked and frozen and Martin also touched her hand and placed it on his erect penis.

He told the girl it was their secret and that she mustn’t tell anyone. Disgustingly, Martin also put his tongue into the girl’s mouth.

During the trial it was heard that the victim kept the abuse to herself for many years but in the late 1990s bumped into Martin in the street. Seeing him cause heightened anxiety and the victim went to the doctor and received counselling.
