Perv student ‘upskirted’ more than 20 women on uni campus and filmed it
A pervert secretly filmed up the skirts of more than 20 female students.
Student Doyun Kim, 21, was caught with 24 videos on his mobile phone of women around campus at the University of Manchester in 2019.
Manchester Crown Court was told how footage showed victims being targeted while out shopping, at a party, getting into a lift and getting on a bus.
Kim, of Sheephouse Way in New Malden, Kingston-upon-Thames, was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for five years after pleading guilty to 22 counts of voyeurism and two of attempted voyeurism.
A police investigation was launched in November 2019, but Kim – also known as ‘Eric’ – was arrested two months after a fellow student found his iPhone – set up to film peers naked in a communal bathroom – hidden in bin bags.
The South Korean national’s victims said they felt “violated”,
A Probation Service report said Kim posed a “high risk” of reoffending and a “medium risk” of causing harm.
Kate Blackwell QC, representing Kim, said her client had completed a Safer Lives program to address his behaviour, adding: “I cannot disagree with what has been advised in the pre-sentence report especially with the level of involvement that this defendant has had.”
Judge Mr Recorder Anthony O’Donohoe said he was “impressed” with a letter to him from the defendant as it was “not self-pitying”. He also read a character reference from Kim’s uncle.
“It seems that for a very large part of your life you were an isolated individual,” he said.
He told Kim: “There’s a mistaken belief this can be a victimless crime. It’s not. The victim impact statements in this case speak of the hurt, anger and distress that have arisen because of your behaviour.”
Kim, a first year engineering student, was also ordered to complete a three-year community order, along with the Horizon Sex Offenders Programme and 220 hours of unpaid work. He will be made subject of a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
