Paedophile who raped boy in 1970s jailed for eight years

A paedophile who raped and sexually assaulted a boy when he was aged as young as four has been jailed for eight years.

Paul Mannion, from Widnes, was locked up for sexually abusing children for a second time at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday, March 11.

The court heard that the now 63-year-old ‘repeatedly’ targeted his victim at an address in the town over the course of five years in the 1970s.

Mannion, who was in his mid-to-late teens at the time, forced the youngster to perform sex acts and committed assaults on him on at least 20 occasions.

When the boy was only six years old, he was raped by the defendant – who only stopped when the his victim burst into tears due to the pain.

After committing his vile offences, the pervert would ‘reward’ the child by giving him 50p or ice cream.

He eventually stood up to Mannion, now of Warrington, when he was aged eight and threatened to report the abuse, after which the attacks stopped.

The distressing events had a ‘long lasting’ impact on him, but he finally ‘found the strength to disclose what had happened’ to the police in 2019.

In a statement read out to the court on his behalf, the complainant said: “I can’t help but think my life would have been so much different if this hadn’t happened to me.

“I pretended that everything was ok, but inside it was tearing me apart

“He robbed my childhood and ruined my adulthood.

“It will always be with me.”

Mannion, who was previously jailed for 30 months at Mold Crown Court in 1989 for raping a young girl, admitted buggery and seven counts of indecent assault during an earlier hearing.

He was also handed a lifelong sexual harm prevention order barring him from having unsupervised contact with children.

Sentencing, judge Stuart Driver said: “Your offending has had a severe ongoing and lifelong impact on your victim.

“This is the culmination of years of abuse.”

Mannion will serve two thirds of his sentence in custody before being released on licence.
