Ingrained paedophile’s sick abuse wrecked lives of four young victims

A “wholly ingrained paedophile” has been sentenced to a lengthy term of imprisonment for the wholesale and devastating abuse of four young girls.

Mark Hubbucks, 63, raped and abused the victims threatening to kill their families or himself if they ever told anyone. Tragically, one of the victims was not able to see her attacker receive justice, having been thought to have taken her own life.

Hubbucks, of Victoria Road in St Austell and formerly of Bodmin, appeared at Truro Crown Court for sentence having pleaded guilty to attempted rape, four indecent assaults, four gross indecency with a child charges, four rapes, causing or inciting a child to watch an image of sexual activity and four counts of making indecent images of a child.

The crimes took place in Cornwall and out of county over two decades.

Much of what prosecuting barrister Jason Beal told the court is too graphic to be reported, but Hubbucks forced the first victim to masturbate him, touched her sexually, performed oral sex on her and attempted to rape her.

Regarding the second victim, Mr Beal told the court that Hubbucks again forced her to touch his penis when she was aged 9 or 10 and made her watch a pornographic film, saying he wanted to do that to her. Hubbucks told the terrified girl that if she told anyone he’d kill her mother.

The third underage and vulnerable victim was violently raped by Hubbucks in a hotel room. He also said he’d give her £5 to perform a sex act on him.

The final victim was touched over and under the clothing and forced to watch a pornographic film.

Sadly one of the victims has since died with an inquest recording an open verdict, saying it was possible she took her own life deliberately.

Hubbucks was interviewed on several occasions and police were able to seize a computer tower that had a number of indecent images spanning all categories showing children aged 5 to 13 being abused.

The moving victim impact statements of three of the victims were read to the court.

The first said she was a gentle, timid and depressed girl and that Hubbucks preyed on her vulnerability and manipulated her into doing things.

She says her attacker is in her head every day in some form and that she finds the feelings of guilt, shame and resentment suffocating. She previously tried to take her own life.

The second victim described how Hubbucks took away her innocence, saying the abuse was “truly the most horrendous experience”. She has suffered greatly with depression and anxiety.

The third victim said she lost her childhood and is no longer able to trust men.

Judge Linford remarked that Hubbucks’ behaviour had completely wrecked lives and taken away innocence and childhoods and that his threats to harm family members left the victims scared

Judge Linford added: “You told one of the girls that if she told anyone you’d go to prison and kill yourself. Well that’s where you’re going.”

Hubbucks was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison with two extra on licence on release.

He must also sign the sex offenders’ register for life.
