Student rape fiend caged
A brutal rapist who sent shockwaves through the Manchester University community has been sentenced to more than two years.
Martin Kerrigan, 20, struck as a girl student walked home in the Owens Park area of Fallowfield after a night out drinking and dancing with pals.
Kerrigan grabbed the student from behind, dragged her down an alleyway and told her: “Don’t scream, don’t scream or I’ll stab you”, before proceeding to rape her.
Prosecutor Suzanne Goddard told Manchester Crown Court: “She is now hyper-alert, very wary of men and unable to go out after dark alone. The incident has affected her, her family and her friends and all aspects of her life.”
Miss Goddard said the 20-year-old student still suffers flashbacks about the attack.
Kerrigan, of Kingsway, Burnage, was arrested after DNA tests showed he was the attacker.
He admitted rape and attempted robbery and was sentenced to a minimum of two years 143 days in a young offenders’ institution before being considered for parole.
