Paedophile coach’s conviction brings joy to players who accused him of sex attacks

Footballers who accused their coach of sexually abusing them when they were kids have spoken of their relief after he was finally outed as a dangerous sex offender.

Retired firefighter John Queen, 67, was brought to justice last week, 12 years after his reign of terror over young boys came to an end.

He was convicted of sexually abusing two boys, between 2005 and 2009, following a trial at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court.

Queen abused his position as manager of a club in Paisley, Renfrewshire, to force himself on the youngsters when they were aged between 14 and 19.

In 2018, he was cleared of identical offences towards eight other boys, between 1984 and 2007.

And some of those involved in the 2018 trial have now broken their silence – to speak of their joy at his conviction.

They believe the conviction in the latest case has finally brought justice and outed Queen as a paedophile.

One of the boys said: “The most important aspect is that justice has been served in the end.

“We felt badly let down in 2018.

“I’m just glad! It’s bittersweet, that’s for sure!

“I’m happy but it’s a hard pill to swallow when the exact same thing he was accused of in our case was a different outcome.”

Another of the boys said: “I’m very glad it’s out there now, for all to see, that he is a sex offender.

“The news of his conviction is good.”

One of the boy’s mum’s added: “A guilty verdict is bittersweet for the boys.

“I hope John Queen’s supporters hang their heads in shame.”

Brazen beast Queen, who once boasted should have been given an OBE for his work with children, paid boys to do odd jobs around his house.

He made himself out to be a Good Samaritan who helped them if they were struggling financially, or didn’t have father figures.

And he swore on his late wife’s ashes he’d done nothing wrong – and crowed he’d saved a pensioner’s life at a wedding.

But the jury convicted him of repeatedly sexually assaulting two boys when they were aged between 14 and 18 – at his home in Elderslie, Renfrewshire, and a school in the county.

He gave them naked massages, touched their privates, and made the younger of his victims take a shower in his home – and entered the bathroom while he did so.

He also dried the older boy after he’d showered, and made him do exercises in front of him in just his pants.

And Queen stripped the boy off and performed a sex act on him when he was 18 – after they’d been to a pub together and his victim was too drunk to consent.

He will be sentenced next month.
