Paedophile caught trying to meet 13-year-old girl at Derby hotel

A paedophile booked a hotel room in Derby to meet a 13-year-old girl for sex.

But when Thomas Thompson arrived in the city he was arrested as the underage teen was really a decoy

And when police examined the 58-year-old’s electronic devices he had vile child abuse images on them.

Thompson’s offending came to light following a police investigation which resulted in evidence of the defendant grooming a person he believed to be 13 and arranging a meeting.

He was arrested in Derby, where he travelled almost 170 miles from his home address in Penrith in order to meet a person he thought was an underage girl, in May this year.

Detectives found evidence that he booked a hotel room in advance in order to take the child somewhere for the purpose of sexual activity.

Detectives found more than 30 indecent images of children on a laptop belonging to him.

Thompson, of Holyoake Terrace, Penrith, was sentenced for his crimes last week at Carlisle Crown Court.

He pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a girl under the age of 16 following sexual grooming and arranging the commission of a child sex offence.

Thompson also pleaded guilty to two counts of making indecent images of a child.

He was handed a two-year custodial sentence suspended for two years.
