Victims praised for helping to put ‘sickening and depraved’ North Shields pervert behind bars

Terry Hopper who raped a young teenager

The victims who helped put a vile paedophile behind bars have been praised by police.

Terry Hopper, 37, of Sibthorpe Street, North Shields, was sentenced to nearly a decade in prison after he raped a child after tricking her into meeting him by posing as a teenage boy.

When Hopper was in his late 20s, he created a fake persona called ‘Matt Hunt’ and began messaging his first victim on social media.

He deceived the 13-year-old girl by telling her he was 15 and went as far as sending a picture of a sandy haired teen. Hopper then repeatedly pressured the girl into sending him nude photos.

Having told her he loved her and won her trust, he persuaded her to meet up with him but when she did she was horrified to discover he was an older man.

She confronted him and told him she was leaving, he then threatened to expose her photos if she did not come with him.

Hopper then took the 13-year-old to a dingy flat where she was then raped by him and further blackmailed her into not telling anyone what was happening.

Around the same time, Hopper had made contact with his second victim who was aged 12 or 13. He used the same fake name and suggested he was 17.

He began watching her as she walked to school and telling her what she was wearing each day on her morning walk.

He pressured and manipulated her into sending nude photos and she hoped if she did, he would leave her alone for good.

Years later both brave survivors found the courage to expose Hopper.

He was arrested in March 2020 and in May 2021, at Newcastle Crown Court, he entered guilty pleas to rape and attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.

He was back at that same court last Friday where victim impact statements were read out as a judge heard how Hopper ‘stole’ both girls’ childhoods. He was sentenced to nine years in prison.

As well as the nine year prison sentence, of which he must serve up to two-thirds in custody, he was also made subject to sex offender registration, a sexual harm prevention order and a restraining order in relation to both victims.
