Scotland’s ‘worst stalker’ performed indecent act in front of shocked female guard as he sat in cell

A notorious Scottish sex offender performed an indecent act in front of a shocked female guard as he sat on a bed in his prison cell.

Gary Travers left the woman “embarrassed and disgusted” with his lewd behaviour, a court heard.

Travers, 46, was found guilty today of staring at the officer, touching his genitals and furiously masturbating in his cell at HMP Addiewell.

Airdrie Sheriff Court heard the incident happened on August 25, 2019.

The female guard had been working there for only four months at the time.

She told the court that cell doors had been open for breakfast and she was at her desk working on emails when she noticed Travers staring at her “in an offputting manner”.

The officer, now aged 22, said: “It was continuous and I asked him to stop. So did a male colleague.

“But once I was on my own again he continued staring.

“He was sitting on the top bunk in his cell with his back against the wall.

“He put his hand down his jogging bottoms and touched his genitals while looking directly at me.

“Then he got up on his knees and started masturbating.

“By this time he had his trousers at his knees. He wasn’t wearing underwear and I could see his penis.

“It went on for about a minute. He kept smiling.

“Then he jumped off the bed, picked up toilet roll and dried his hands.”

The guard said she and her male colleague confronted Travers who acted “like nothing had happened”.

Asked by prosecutor Mohammed Sarwar how the incident had made her feel, the woman replied: “Very uncomfortable, embarrassed and disgusting. It was quite intimidating as well.”

It was put to her that she was mistaken and couldn’t possibly have seen any such action from her desk in the corridor.

But the guard insisted: “Definitely not. It was pretty clear what he was doing. I was only about three metres from his cell and the door was ajar.”

Travers denied any wrongdoing and his lawyer questioned why he would carry out such an act when his door was open and other prisoners could walk past at any time.

The jury returned a majority guilty verdict.

Travers was also convicted of masturbating in front of a teenage girl in Moodiesburn, Lanarkshire, on April 25 last year.

Sheriff David Young jailed him for 26 months and placed him on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years.

The sheriff said that while neither victim had suffered physical injury they were both distressed.

He told Travers: “The prison officer had no choice but to remain at her place of work given her duties. You took advantage of this.”

Travers has a string of convictions for sexual offences dating back to 1996.

His crimes include committing an indecent act outside a woman’s house after cutting wires on her security lights.

At one stage he was given a 10-year curfew, banning him from leaving home after 7pm.

Travers was jailed for two years in 2017 for breaching the terms of a sex offenders prevention order.

A clinical psychologist has described him as “a persistent, high-risk sex offender”.

In 2013, Travers was given four years at the High Court in Glasgow after he threw a cup of urine over Sheriff John Rafferty and other Court officials
